There May Be Only One Way To Unscrew This Fork
11 Dimensional Chess has gotten Obama into every chess player's nightmare. A fork in chess is when a player is essentially screwed. He has to lose one piece or another and losing either piece makes the player's position weaker.
The problem as many people have realized is this: pass Health Care Reform after it has been improved by its opponents in the Senate and enrage the people who voted for Obama or fail to pass reform and enrage the people who voted for Obama. This quandary threatens Obama's Presidency more than the qWagmire he volunteered for in Afghanistan.
Sen. Reid, the majority leader who has managed to make pablum look exciting and flavorful, has by either accident or design let the bill devolve. It has gone from something that nearly everyone but the insurance companies wanted to something that practically only the insurance companies want.
The way out? In chess you can either give in to the fork or create a countermove that makes the attacker have to forget about the position you are in. The Senate Democrats must use the nuclear option. Even better would be to get rid of the filibuster. Republicans will have to recalculate their obstructionism because they will be totally irrelevant. Reid and Obama have the majority of votes necessary for real healthcare reform. Republicans were ready to do it to insure Bush's idiotic court appointments got confirmed. They never had to exercise the nuclear option because Sen. Reid would always pull Democrats back from the brink.
This time sidestepping the filibuster is not about an incompetent fool's appointments but tens of thousands of lives. The nuclear option should only be used in emergencies and if there ever was one this is it. 30,000 people have died as Reid and Obama got the Senate vote from 56 to 59.5 but lost almost everything worth keeping in the process. Sen. Reid can go down in history as the most ineffective Senate leader of all time or he can be remembered as the Senate leader who returned democracy to the Senate by destroying the filibuster.
President Obama's stake in Sen. Reid using the nuclear option is even greater than Harry's. It's your move, Harry.

A Modest Experiment
After trillions for banksters and trillions for bombing a country that had nothing to do with 9/11 I will take the liberty of saving I have a modest proposal of a mere $2 billion that I think will have a large impact on jobs and energy. Currently a megawatt of electrical power generated by solar energy costs about $4 million to build. Solar power isn't necessarily produced best by a centralized concern.
My proposal is this: Build a 1 megawatt solar farm in each every Congressional District. This will give economies of scale to solar fabric production and give jobs and experience in solar farm building throughout the country. It wouldn't hurt to add a few extra million to pay local writers, photographers and videographers to document this historic event.

As Digby Says:
The Best We Can Do:
I think it's really cool being lectured to by Obama about not getting everything you want. I would imagine that Joe Liberman laughed and laughed and laughed at that one.

The Fury of Dashed Dreams
Obama and the Democrats may soon feel the fury of dashed dreams. We dreamed of change. We hoped no more Americans would have to die for lack of health care.
If the "historic" health care reform consists of mandatory insurance for people who can't afford it then the Democrats will have failed and their staunchest supporters will know it. It won't matter how much the leadership pats themselves on the back for passing "historic" legislation.

Obama's mentor Lieberman is holding up healthcare for personal gain. At this time I would stop appeasing the negligent homicidal Senator from Connecticut and instead go over Jowl's head to the American people. Create the pony plan. Make Medicare free for all Americans. Let the Senators of death oppose it. Make them filibuster night and day for the next 12 months. Let it be the issue of 2010.

I've Got A Bad Feeling About This...
Senate Democrats See Room for Hope on Health Care Bill
The new, nonprofit insurance plans would be overseen by a well-established federal agency, the Office of Personnel Management, which now runs the Federal Employees Health Benefits Program and negotiates prices and benefits packages with private insurance companies.Emphasis added. So the private insurance companies are selling non-profit plans? If you believe that then I have a bridge I can let you have really cheaply.

No Number Of Troops Will Be Enough For Cheney's Thirst
Halliburton spun off KBR shares to its stockholders. The $30 billion to send more soldiers to die in Afghanistan is going to cost $1 million per soldier per year. Much of that goes to KBR. When Dic "Five Deferments" Cheney goes on TV pushing for more troops he is identified as former Vice President and not as a money grubbing leech.
