Old Fashioned Patriot

I wrote back in Sept 2005 that a timetable to get out of Iraq was the best thing to do. Public opinion now agrees with me.

George Bush, in his usual confused state, said his "War on Terror" is like our America's War of Independence because invading Iraq with troops and mercernaries is exactly like defending our shores from English invaders and Hessian mercenaries.

Our troops shouldn't be there. Leaving them there is only to save Bush embarassment. To hell with that. Bush and Cheney should be tarred and feathered for ruining America's reputation. Small children should be taught to point their fingers and laugh at those old men who tell lies for personal gain. Congress shouldn't be debating should we stay. Congress should be debating how can we rectify Bush's gruesome holocaust on Iraq.

Tired of Bush's dirge that he needs a surge? Reframe the debate. Declare the troops will be available to Iraq if they ask for our help but until such time our troops are needed at home to rebuild New Orleans and the rest of the South that Bush has neglected after Hurricane Katrina.

What is Don Young's excuse? Is it that hard to find real Lincoln quotes? He might have found this one if he looked, "Better to remain silent and be thought a fool than to speak out and remove all doubt."

Bush blames Iran for arming Iraqi insurgents. So is Bush claiming his mother cheated on his father and that he is really Iranian or is he counting on Americans' short memory about who left Al QaQaa unguarded giving insurgents hundreds of tons of high explosives? Explosives that were under surveillance until Bush's deadly temper tantrum called "Shock and Awe."

Protest while you still can. Oppose Bush's suspending of the Constitution.

It looks like Iraq's fledgling democracy is on the Bush junta express faster than Laura Bush can run a stop sign. From the NY Times:

In a televised speech, Lt. Gen. Aboud Qanbar, who is leading the new crackdown, also announced the closing of Iraq’s borders with Iran and Syria, an extension of the curfew in Baghdad by an hour, and the setup of new checkpoints run by the Defense and Interior Ministries, both of which General Qanbar said he now controlled.

He said the government would break into homes and cars it deemed dangerous, open mail and eavesdrop on phone calls.

Opening mail and eavesdropping on phone calls sounds familiar...

No one could have anticipated that the son of one of the world's largest arm dealers would make up reasons to send Americans off to die in war. Maybe the family's profit is secondary; maybe he has just outgrown blowing up frogs.

As America dutifully trudges to the $500 billion mark for Bush's fiasco, I am reminded why MBAs are so often ridiculed. At this point, it would have been cheaper to buy Iraq than bomb it.

As Martin Lewis points out, $500 billion for war is the same as giving each Iraqi $20,000. If Bush had allowed free market forces to operate he could have paid each Iraqi $20,000 to move out of the country. A family of 5 would have $100,000 to start over somewhere else. Compare that to today's Iraqi refugee crisis where Iraqis are leaving the country en masse and penniless. I thought business school was supposed to teach its students to create win/win situations not lose/lose propositions.

This kind of out of the box business thinking could have been a boon for the American taxpayer instead of the disaster it is now. We are going to pay trillions of dollars of interest for those billions of dollars we borrowed from the Chinese to bomb Iraq.

Skeptics may wonder how Americans could have profited from paying Iraqis to leave Iraq? With Iraqis gone we could claim the oil they left behind and sell it to Exxon, Shell and Chevron. For example, using just Exxon's quarterly profits for the next 10 years we could double our money that we laid out to buy Iraq. Another win/win situation! American tax dollars at work earning us money and getting Exxon plentiful and cheap oil.

Some might say this ridiculous. American taxpayers shouldn't be thinking about making money from this Iraq deal. But look at this way. We are paying approximately $150 million to get an American killed using Shock & Awe. Only a complete and utter failure would want to stick to a deal like that for two more years.
